The University of Toronto offers over 5,800 in-course awards each year to recognize and support current students. These awards are designed to celebrate academic excellence, leadership, and contribution to the university community.
Learn more about the various in-course award opportunities, each with their own eligibility criteria. In addition to these, there are other awards offered by divisions that may require a separate application.

Notification of Decision
Award recipients will receive an award letter by email from the University Registrar’s Office, usually one month after the application deadline. The award letter will include information on the award payment and should be kept for future reference.

The Abdul Razak and Sofia Naik Award, of approximately $400 is awarded to a student with a disability on the basis of financial need.

The Allen Angus Rodgers Wheelchair Athletes’ Fund Disability Bursaries are of approximately $1,100 and available to disabled students in any program at the University of Toronto. Candidates must demonstrate financial need, contribution to their community through volunteer work or demonstrated leadership ability, and maintain satisfactory academic standing.

The Anita Garbarino Girard Award is awarded to full-time undergraduate or graduate students at any Faculty or Campus.

The Beata Fitzpatrick Award is intended for U of T administrative staff pursuing a degree. The amount awarded is dependent on annual income.

To be awarded to female students, who are residents of Etobicoke, on the basis of financial need. One bursary to be awarded to a first year undergraduate student and one bursary to be awarded to a second or higher year undergraduate student.

To be awarded to the student on the basis of academic excellence and demonstrated dance experience. An applicant will be required to submit a letter verifying at least three years of attendance at a recognized dance institute along with a transcript of marks.

The scholarships will be awarded on the basis of financial need and academic achievement, particularly in courses related to community health nursing.

Undergraduate Scholarship:
- Open to students completing the third year of the four year BScN program, until this program ceases to exist, and to students completing the first year of the second-entry two year BScN program.
- Preference may be given to students who are proficient in a language besides English and whose interest is to work with multicultural families.

Graduate Scholarship:
- Open to students enrolled in the Graduate Department of Nursing Science who have completed courses in community health and demonstrate a commitment to this aspect of nursing.

Value/Amount: One undergraduate scholarship of $5,000 and one graduate scholarship valued at the balance of the annual income.
The scholarships will be awarded to indigenous students studying in any of the health professional programs, undergraduate or graduate, on the basis of financial need, academic merit and demonstrated community leadership skills.

The City of Toronto Women’s Studies Scholarship is awarded to:
- One undergraduate student who has completed year three and is enrolled in a major or specialist program in Women’s Studies.
- One graduate student enrolled in the Graduate studies in Women and Gender Studies (Degree or Collaborative Program).
Both the undergraduate and graduate scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic merit and financial need to students in Women and Gender Studies, enrolled full-time or part-time, deemed most likely to contribute to studies on the status of women, community studies and public policy.

- be a Canadian citizen /permanent resident and resident of Ontario;
- have completed at least 13.5 credits
- be enrolled in a major or specialist program in Women’s Studies

The Dan Leckie City of Toronto Award recognizes undergraduate or graduate students who are full-time residents of the City of Toronto, on the basis of academic merit and financial need.
Eligibility:
Recipient must:
- be a full-time resident of the City of Toronto;
- be an undergraduate or graduate student in the Division of the Environment or Community Studies or any program of study relating to these fields such as Political Science, Economics, Sociology, Health Science, Education.
- demonstrate financial need.
- demonstrate academic merit.

To be awarded annually to a 3rd or 4th year full time or part time undergraduate student in any faculty who has financial need and an interest in pursuing work in any aspect of Caribbean study/research. Copy of final paper/work, conforming to accepted academic standards, should be provided to the CEOC for future reference and to build a collection of outstanding work in Caribbean study.

To be awarded to a graduate or undergraduate student(s) registered with Accessibility Services office at U of T with financial need who face barriers related to mobility or sensory disabilities. Students are eligible to receive the award for subsequent years.

- be a student registered with Accessibility Services;

The Dr. Anderson Abbott Award of $4,000 is awarded to a black student in any program of study on the basis of academic achievement, financial need and contribution to the black community.

- be a black undergraduate student in any program of study;
- show high academic achievement;
- demonstrate financial need;
- present evidence of contribution to the black community.
The selection committee may give preference to a student in the medical program or in a related health science program.

To be awarded annually to a master’s or doctoral full time or part time student in any faculty who has an interest in pursuing any aspect of scholarly work which recognizes the multi-cultural composition of the Caribbean, and who demonstrates financial need.

To be awarded to Indigenous students studying full-time at the University of Toronto on the basis of financial need and Ontario residency as defined by OSOTF II program conditions. Individual bursaries will vary in value depending on the need of the candidate. Aboriginal students enrolled in the Transitional Year Programme, undergraduate and graduate level programs and second entry studies will all be eligible to apply. Preference will be given to applicants who can demonstrate a contribution to the Aboriginal community through volunteerism and involvement with First Nations House and/or Native Student’s Association.

The Edward and Dorothy Dawson Award for Indigenous Students is designed for Indigenous students with financial need. The value of the award is dependent on financial need, and preference is given to Indigenous students enrolled in any science related discipline.

If no suitable candidates can be found, consideration will be given to Indigenous Students in any discipline on the basis of financial need.

The E.J. Pratt Award in Poetry competition is open to any student proceeding toward a first or a post-graduate degree at the University of Toronto. The award will be made based on the most outstanding poetry submission. If, in the opinion of the selection committee, no submission is of sufficient excellence, the award will not be given.

- be proceeding toward a first or a post-graduate degree at the University of Toronto.
- The award will be made on the basis of the poem, or group of related poems, judged to be the most outstanding submission. Entries should be no more than 3 pages in length. No previously published composition will be considered, except for work in campus student publications. No more than three entries will be accepted from any student. If, in the opinion of the selection committee, no submission is of sufficient excellence, the award will not be given. You must attach your personal work (poem, or group of related poems) as a separate file. Please note that your submission will be reviewed under pseudonyms.

Awarded to student in the third and fourth year of a specialist program in Commerce/Accounting who have successfully completed accounting courses.
Eligibility:

- be third or fourth year full time or part-time student enrolled in a Commerce/ Accounting Specialist
- Third year students must be enrolled in a Commerce Specialist who are enrolled in a third year course in accounting (RSM320H, 321H, 322H, or equivalent courses) and who have successfully completed a second year course in accounting (RSM220H, 221H, 222H, or equivalent courses).
- Fourth year students must be enrolled in Commerce Specialist who are enrolled in a fourth year course in accounting (RSM422H, 423H, 426H or equivalent courses) and who have successfully completed a third year course in accounting (RSM320H, 321H, 322H, or equivalent courses).

The award is open to students on the St. George, UTM and UTSC campuses.

The Estonian Scholarship Fund provides funding to students from Estonia, and to Canadian students researching topics related to Estonia, or doing work associated with the Chair of Estonian Studies. The award is made on the basis of academic merit and financial need.
Eligibility: Undergraduate or graduate students on the basis of academic merit and financial need.
Recipient must:
- Demonstrate academic merit and financial need
- Represent one of the following categories:
- Exchange students from Tartu University in Estonia as described in the exchange agreement between the University of Toronto and Tartu University;
- Exchange students from the Tallinn Technical University in Estonia as described in the exchange agreement between the University of Toronto and the Tallinn Technical University;
- Other students from Estonia studying at the University of Toronto;
- Canadian students doing work associated with the Chair of Estonian Studies;
- Canadian candidates undertaking research on Estonia from a Social Sciences or Humanities perspective, and on Estonians’ interactions with other peoples of Central and Eastern Europe.

To be awarded to graduate or undergraduate students who identify as Black student, based on financial need and a demonstrated commitment to community leadership in advancing social equity and/or outstanding contributions to the Black community. The recipient must be currently enrolled or accepted an offer of admission in a U of T program (undergraduate, Masters or Doctoral), second entry program or research-stream graduate program (Masters or Ph.D.).

- Demonstrate commitment to community leadership in advancing social equity and/or outstanding contributions to the Black community
The candidates will be reviewed by the EiB Award Selection Committee comprised of student club representatives from the Rotman School of Management, Faculty of Medicine, and Faculty of Law.

Awarded to Indigenous undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need.

- Prior to applying for this grant, students are expected to have explored all sources of funding such as band funding, family support, savings, summer and study period income, OSAP or other government assistance programs, daycare subsidies, and bank lines of credit as appropriate.
The Frederick Marker award is awarded to undergraduate or graduate students on the basis of financial need.

The Gladys Watson Indigenous Education Fund provides grant funding to Indigenous students include First Nation (Status, Non-Status), Inuit and Metis students enrolled in University of Toronto graduate programs at the masters or doctoral level, and second-entry professional programs. All full- and part-time Indigenous students in these programs are eligible to apply, with preference given to those students who demonstrate financial need.

The Gwendolyn Peacher Award for the Traditional Arts is granted to an undergraduate student who has demonstrated innovative and creative involvement in the traditional performing arts, preferably in dance. This participation does not necessarily have to be within the University community. Candidates are assessed primarily on the basis of a letter of application describing their interest and involvement in the traditional arts, including previous activities and future plans. In addition, two letters of reference from persons qualified to attest to the candidate’s involvement are required.

- demonstrate innovative and creative involvement in the traditional performing arts, preferably dance, either within the University community or elsewhere.

The Hosinec Family Scholarships are made up of multiple awards varying in value. They are awarded to Ontario students on the basis of need and academic merit.

- demonstrate academic achievement

The Estonian Scholarship Fund provides funding to students from Estonia, and to Canadian students researching topics related to Estonia, or doing work associated with the Chair of Estonian Studies. The award is made on the basis of academic merit and financial need.

- Be Arts and Science students at either the undergraduate or graduate level who meet OSOTF II criteria
- Demonstrate academic merit, and
- Fit the following categories:
- Doing work associated with the Chair of Estonian Studies; and/or
- Undertaking research on Estonia from a Social Sciences or Humanities perspective, or on Estonians’ interactions with other people of Central and Eastern Europe

The Irving J. Hoffman Memorial Scholarship of approximately $1,000 is awarded to a physically disabled student enrolled on either a full-time or part-time basis, who demonstrates superior academic achievement and financial need. Candidates must have completed at least five university credits, or the equivalent.

To be awarded to students of the University of Toronto who in the judgement and discretion of the then Warden of Hart House give promise of developing into mature adults of professional competence, primarily in the general area of public life or social work, with special emphasis on penology, and such fund shall be used for educational purposes of such students in the discretion of the then Warden of Hart House of the University of Toronto.

This scholarship awards approximately $1,300, based on financial need, to students with outstanding academic achievement enrolled in an undergraduate degree program. Preference will be given to candidates from the Afro-Canadian community and Metro Toronto Housing Authority residents. Candidates must demonstrate outstanding service to the Afro-Canadian community. Must be a Canadian citizen/permanent resident and a resident of Ontario.

To be awarded to a 2nd or 3rd student who is enrolled in a Specialist or Major program in the Department of History of Art in the Faculty of Arts and Science or in Visual Studies in the Faculty of Architecture. Financial need must be considered. The recipient must also have a high GPA of 3.3 (B+) as well as demonstrate involvement in the community.

Preference will be given to applicants who can demonstrate a contribution to the Indigenous community through volunteerism and involvement with the Native Students Association.

The Merit College Scholarship for Leadership and Academic Excellence at the University of Toronto is to be awarded to a full-time international undergraduate student entering their 1st year at University of Toronto who graduated from Merit College/Merit Education with demonstrated leadership and academic excellence.

- Demonstrated leadership and academic excellence

The Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) Métis Student Bursary Program provides bursaries to students registered and enrolled at the University of Toronto who demonstrate financial need and who are verified Métis citizens of the Métis Nation of Ontario. Applicants will be required to consent to a citizenship verification check to confirm eligibility for these awards.

The Nelson Mandela Award is awarded to fourth year students on the basis of academic excellence, demonstrated leadership and community involvement. Eligible candidates must demonstrate, through their studies and community involvement, a commitment to promoting peace, justice, citizenship and human rights. This award has been established to celebrate the life of Nelson Mandela.

The Norma Dewar Chisholm Memorial Bursary is awarded to an undergraduate student registered with Accessibility Services, on the basis of financial need. Preference will be given to students with a physical or sensory disability.

- be a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident of Canada or protected person and must be a resident of Ontario;
- be an undergraduate student registered with Accessibility Services;
- demonstrate financial need.

The Nortel Institute Undergraduate Scholarship, with an approximate value of up to $5,000, is awarded to undergraduate students in second or third year in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering, the Faculty of Arts and Science, University of Toronto Mississauga and University of Toronto Scarborough. Candidates are considered on the basis of financial need, academic merit (minimum CGPA of 3.0) and an essay.
Candidates are also required to demonstrate active involvement in one of the followings:
- Research, coursework or work experience involving micro/nanofabrication;
- A proposal for potential student summer research project or capstone project involving micro/nanofabrication.
