Tuition Fees & Schedules

Tuition fees are assessed as either program-based fees or course-based fees. These charges, along with incidental and ancillary fees, are outlined on your ACORN invoice, which categorizes fees into Tuition and Non-Tuition Charges.

All fees are subject to approval by the Governing Council. Fees may be subject to change and will be billed or reversed according to our standard procedures.

Program vs. Course-Based Fees

Fees are billed based on a combination of factors such as program of study, legal status, course load, year of entry, and year of study.

Program fees are a flat rate amount charged to all students in a program of study. This covers tuition at the program level rather than billing by individual courses. View the fee schedule for your program of study to see how fees are billed.

Note: If registration for a session is cancelled, the program fee is reversed according to the refund schedule applicable to the student’s program of study.

Fees are billed on a per-course basis according to the fee schedule for your program of study.

Adding a Course:

  • The course fee is charged immediately, regardless of when the course begins.
  • If adding a course changes your status from part-time studies to full-time studies, part-time incidental fees will be reversed, and full-time incidental fees will be billed.
    • Note: The definition of full-time and part-time is not the same for all programs. Check with your registrar’s office if you are unsure of this definition.

Canceling a Course:

  • The course fee is reversed according to the refund schedule applicable to your program of study.
  • If cancelling a course changes your status from full-time studies to part-time studies, you pay full-time incidental fees, unless the change is made during the 100% refund period for that course.

When Tuition Fee Billing Begins

Students can access their invoices in ACORN as follows:

  • Fall-Winter Session: Mid-July
  • Summer Session: Mid-April

It is important to monitor your student account as changes to your enrolment activity may affect your fees and to ensure payments are appropriately applied. This ensures that you do not have any unpaid fees or need to request a refund.

Guide to Understanding Your Invoice

Tuition Fee Categories

Your legal status and residency affect the fees you are charged. Students are classified at either a domestic or international tuition rate based on their citizenship or residency.

Students who are Canadian citizens, permanent residents or protected persons are charged domestic fees.

  • Undergraduate students are billed Domestic Ontario resident tuition fees or Domestic non-Ontario resident tuition fees.
    • Eligible students may apply to be billed as a domestic Ontario resident with a fee exemption.
  • Graduate students are billed Domestic tuition fees.

Students who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents are charged the international student fee, unless the student has received an International Fee Exemption.

Deregulated Program Fees

Provincial fee regulations permit universities to assess higher tuition fees for specialized programs; these are referred to as deregulated programs. Students enrolled in deregulated programs will have tuition fees assessed at a higher rate once they are accepted into the program and have earned 4.0 or more credits, including transfer credits. The tuition rate for deregulated programs varies by the program.

For more information on programs with deregulated fees, visit the division or faculty website.

Here’s how fees are applied for students enrolled in these programs:

  • Full-time Basis: Students are assessed a program fee.
  • Part-time Basis: Students are assessed course fees.
  • Deregulated fees are applied as soon as the student accepts enrolment into a deregulated program.
  • Students accepted into deregulated programs will have their tuition fees assessed at the higher rate once they have earned 4.0 credits or more (including transfer credits).
  • Students enrolled in more than one program are assessed the highest fee applicable.
  • Students registered with Accessibility Services who have course load accommodation will be billed course fees for a course load up to a maximum of 4.5 credits in the Fall/Winter and 2.0 credits in the Summer.

Program or Campus Change: Students considering a program or campus change should discuss the change with their Registrar to understand fee implications.

Resources

Visit the faculty registrar’s office for information about entry points for these programs:

For more information about fees, view your divisional fee schedule.

If you have any questions and/or concerns about your student account, speak to a Financial Aid Advisor immediately.

Students admitted to a deregulated program who have completed more than 4 credits (including transfer credits) will be charged deregulated fees retroactively for all sessions following the completion of the 4th credit onwards. For more information, please visit your division or faculty website.

Shortly after accepting your offer to a deregulated program, your fees will be reassessed. Check ACORN regularly for your revised balance and pay this as soon as possible to avoid service charges.

You are eligible for a reversal of the current session deregulated fees if you withdraw from the deregulated program within the 100% refund period and maintain your registration. The deregulated fees for your current session will be reversed, and your fees will be adjusted to reflect the rates for your program of study.

If you were billed retroactive fees, a reversal of the retroactive deregulated fees will be eligible if the following conditions apply:

Fall-Winter Session

  • You were admitted to the deregulated program between July 1 – November 1.
  • You withdraw from the deregulated program by the last day of classes for the Fall term.
  • At the time that you withdraw from the deregulated program, you remain registered for the current Fall – Winter session.

Winter Term only

  • You were admitted to the deregulated program between November 2 – February 1.
  • You are enrolled in S courses only.
  • You withdraw from the deregulated program by the last day of classes for the Winter term.
  • At the time that you withdraw from the deregulated program, you remain registered for the current Winter term.

Summer Session

  • You were admitted to the deregulated program between February 2 – June 30.
  • You withdraw from the deregulated program by the last day of classes for the Fall term.
  • At the time that you withdraw from the deregulated program, you remain registered for the current summer session.

Tuition Fee Exemptions

Tuition fee exemptions can be temporary or permanent and adjust a student’s Tuition Fee Category, which determines the tuition fees a student will pay. There are two types of exemptions, an International tuition fee exemption and a Domestic Non-Ontario Resident Tuition Fee Exemption. Each exemption type has specific eligibility criteria and deadlines throughout the academic year that students must follow.

Students who meet Ontario residency requirements, and were charged Domestic Non-Ontario resident tuition fees may be eligible for a Domestic non-Ontario resident tuition fee exemption.
