Awards & Scholarships

Newly admitted students entering their first year at U of T may be eligible for admission awards. Many are automatically considered when they apply, while some require a separate application or an awards profile. Award amounts and eligibility vary. Contact your faculty, college, or campus.

If you are a current student or in your final year of study, you can apply for in-course and graduating awards. These awards recognize academic merit and/or financial need and are available for students across different programs.

Award for Scholarly Achievement in the Area of Gender Based Violence

Each December 6th, the University of Toronto community marks the National Day of Remembrance & Action on Violence Against Women with events across the institution. In 2016, the University established the Graduate and Undergraduate Award for Scholarly Achievement to recognize students who have made distinctive contributions in the area of gender-based violence research and prevention. Two awards (one undergraduate and one graduate) are available annually in the amount of $1,500 each.

University of Toronto Grants assist domestic and international students with unforeseen financial emergencies which impact their ability to progress academically. It is expected that prior to applying for this grant, students will have explored all sources of funding such as family support, savings, study period income, government student financial assistance programs, daycare subsidies, and bank lines of credit as appropriate.

Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows can apply for various merit-based awards, including research-based recognition. Visit the School of Graduate Studies for opportunities.

The University of Toronto is committed to supporting students who have had their education disrupted by conflict or war, including scholars and students from Afghanistan, Iran, Ukraine, and Syria.

If you have been notified that you will receive award funding, it will be applied to your ACORN invoice after the registration period, typically in mid-to-late September or mid-to-late January. Awards are typically applied to outstanding balances first.  

Under the “AWARDS” section on your ACORN invoice, the disbursement of your award funding will be recorded.  

Award Refund (debit/credit acct) indicates that the funds have been applied to your outstanding balance  

Award Refund (to be refunded) indicates that the funds will be paid to you. The payment method will be indicated, either as “Award Refund (cheque)” or “Award Refund (direct deposit).”  

If you are expecting an award payment, please ensure that your direct deposit information and mailing address is updated in ACORN by checking your profile and settings. Direct deposit is the fastest and most reliable way to receive refunds. 

If your registration status changes, your division, faculty, or college may request a partial or full cancellation of the award. The cancellation will be reflected as a fee transaction in your student account and the amount will be due to the University immediately.  Student Accounts may withhold your credit balance while award eligibility is being reviewed. 

If you do not see your award reflected on your ACORN invoice or you have questions about the amount of the award being paid to you or wish to have the award applied to a future session balance, please contact the appropriate awards office for assistance.
